This is a hand carved ceremonial mask from the Kuba Bwoom people of the Congo. The mask incorporates beads and cowrie shells. Actual age unknown. Features a female face with repeating painted triangle pattern, beaded accents, woven back with applied cowrie shells, flat top. The mask was created as a helmet used in initiation ceremonies; the ceremonies include those relating to the founding and creation of the Kuba kingdom as well as the ruling family.
